There is no need to dispose of older software programs. That favorite desktop publishing program that will not function in your current computer operating system can still be used. With the assistance emulation software, older games and other software are able to function. Software emulation programs replicate the functions needed to run older software, making your favorite programs work with newer operating systems. For example, programs that used to run great using an operating system from ten years ago can be used again. When you start the program, it will look for necessary components and command lines it needs to run. The emulation software detected will allow the program to open and function normally. This is called terminal emulation.
Another form of terminal emulation is used in today’s TTY (TeleTYpe terminal) units used by deaf people, those that are hard of hearing, or others that have speech impairments. The units allow use of both land-line and cellular telephones by allowing the person to communicate by typing and receiving text messages. Most cell phones currently have a TTY setting to allow communication with older land-line units. Of course, texting on cell phones is not new, and certainly has become more popular. This allows a less expensive form of communication for people with the hearing or speech impairments and gives them more freedom and portability. One drawback to depending exclusively on a cell phone for communicating is that certain carriers of the service have “blackout” areas where no signal is available. In addition, a hearing impaired user may not notice that a message has been sent, delaying the receipt of urgent communications. Some cell phone companies do take this into consideration, adding vibration and flashing lights as well as sound alerts when a message is received.
Emulation software has also opened up a market for game developers or hobbyists, allowing them to update old computer and video games with new characters, weapons and functions to keep game play fresh. Of course, the legalities for this use have come into question with regard to copyright infringement. However, private use without profit from changing the games protects the copyright of the original creator.
